James C Bell QC, B.Com., LLB, LLM (Cantab.).
Born: 21.10.52
Graduated from Queensland University in 1976. Thereafter
practised at the Queensland Bar. Appointed Queen's Counsel in
1993. In September 1996, commenced study at Cambridge University
for a Masters of Law. Returned to practice in July 1997.
With a background in law and an appreciation of the perception of Australians to their Constitution and to the Monarchy, in 1996 I undertook research and course study with British and other European students. I was shocked to learn of the influence of the European Union on British law and on the current thinking of the British people.
It is this experience which gives me a responsibility to contribute an important perspective to the Constitutional Convention. Australians do not appreciate how advanced the European Union is in respect of its impact on British law and on day to day life. The British perception of a relationship with Australia is historical.
It is time for independence and for a binding commitment from all Australians to this new constitutional independence.
