PETER JOHN MARTIN

Please note that we will soon be asked to vote for a few Queenslanders that have nominated to attend the Constitutional Convention in February next year.

All enrolled Australian voters will be sent a ballot paper during the period 3-14 November 1997. The intention of this, non compulsory, postal vote is to provide all Australians with the opportunity to select a person to attend the Convention. This person will be one that has views on the future of Australia that capture the reason and imagination of you the voter.

I have nominated to attend the Convention. I do not wish to see the Convention monopolised by both the Monarchists and the Republicans. Each of these groups, which are almost political in nature, have the potential to polarise the issue and turn away a somewhat cynical, if not apathetic, public.

The primary question for us all to consider is whether Australia should have an Australian citizen chosen by Australians as its Head of State, or whether it should retain as its Head of State the person who is Monarch of the United Kingdom.

Australia is ready to select an Australian to represent us internationally, nationally, domestically and personally. We are challenged by the future and begged by the past to make a difference for Australia by making a personal contribution today. Please give thoughtful deliberation on your instrument of decision, the ballot paper, when asked to respond to the primary question.

I believe Australia should have an Australian, elected by Australians, as Head of State. As a consequence of this, some Constitutional considerations need to be made. We should not allow ourselves to be distracted by the consequences. Rather, we should make a considered decision about what we believe will be best for the future of Australia; our children's future.

As stated, I have nominated for the Constitutional Convention and would appreciate your support. Please help me to represent you at a Convention that is for the people, about the people.

Thank you.

PETER JOHN MARTIN
