Women for a Just Republic
Women for a Just Republic is the name of a ticket being organised by the Australian Women's Party to run in the election for delegates to the Constitutional Convention.
At the 1897 Constitutional Convention, women were not represented and their opinions were not considered. This is how we are governed to the present day.
We want a Republic that constitutionally guarantees equal representation for women at all levels of government.
We do not want a separate head of state, we believe the Prime Minister should be the only head.
The ticket:
A foundation member of the Australian Women's Party, Mary Kelly is a well known community spokesperson on public school issues. She has worked in the education industry for 20 years on both the industrial and professional side. She currently works on staff and student equity issues in the higher education sector.
Pauline is well known in the North Queensland community. She has been involved in many community justice campaigns. She currently works in Townsville, on domestic violence issues.
Jenny has worked in community groups in Brisbane over the past 20 years. She is a foundation member of the Australian Women's Party. She currently runs a small business working on Anti-discrimination issues. She is a teacher and lawyer.

MEDIA RELEASE 10 OCTOBER 1997:
Last chance for Queensland women
Queensland may only have two women at the Constitutional Convention, according to the Australian Women's Party.
Of the politicians and citizens appointed by the Prime Minister to date, only two out of 76 are women from Queensland.
In the up coming election for 13 more Queenslanders, women are poorly represented in winnable spots.
" Out of 14 major groups running, women head only 4 of them. The two major groups of republicans and monarchists are headed by men," said Mary Kelly, leader of the Women for a Just Republic group.
"Of the 129 candidates running in Queensland, only 36 are women," she said.
"The Convention looks set to imitate parliament in its under representation of women. This underscores the need for a Constitutional guarantee of 50% of parliamentary seats for women. If elected this is the major issue we will raise at the Convention," Ms Kelly said.
