"THE JANSSEN MODEL"

If we are to be a Republic, we should have a purely ceremonial President elected by all Australians from a short list supplied by both Houses of Parliament with the reserve powers to be exercised by the High Court.

Such a proposal would avoid the sensationalist grandstanding of an American campaign and yet satisfy the basic needs of a democracy that the Head of State be chosen by all the people and not just an elite section of them.
