Fate Reunites Old Friends

Palmwoods' Kate McDougal's venture into the army led to an unexpected reunion for family members

LIFE is full of unexpected events and coincidences – just ask long time Palmwoods residents Jan and Ann McDougal.

Jan and Ann’s youngest daughter Kate joined the army at the end of June and had completed her basic training at Kapooka (near Wagga Wagga). The proud family travelled down to watch the ceremony and was celebrating at the Wagga Wagga RSL on August 10 when another diner who looked quite familiar approached them.

"This bloke came up to our table and asked me if I remembered him," Jan said.

"I sure did – it was Chris Murnane who was in the same tent as me in Vietnam for twelve months. We had lost contact after our discharge from the army back in the early seventies."

"After almost 30 years we wondered why the Murnane family was in Wagga, only to discover their son Shaun and our daughter Kate were in the same Platoon and same Company 26th Platoon Charlie Company, and as coincidence would have it were very good friends," he said.

"We now keep in touch regularly."
